FLUX - Trina Basu & Arun Ramamurthy/Vidya Kotamraju
Musicians Trina Basu and Arun Ramamurthy perform stunning, meditative violin duets that draw on Indian classical music, Western chamber music, and jazz improvisation. The performance is preceded by Maktub: Ashes to Alchemy, a dance choreographed and performed by Vidya Kotamraju.
Husband and wife violinists Trina Basu and Arun Ramamurthy reimagine the possibilities of string chamber music. Their sound is intimate yet expansive, rooted in South Indian classical music, Western classical traditions, and jazz. Their improvisational fluency allows their violins to intertwine seamlessly, creating music that feels both ancient and contemporary.
Their debut album, Nakshatra (SPINSTER 2023), named after the Sanskrit word for constellation, explores the balance between individual expression and collective harmony. As The New Yorker writes, their music is “free-flowing and globe-spanning.” The Guardian calls Nakshatra “a gorgeously ruminative listen, blending the traditions of folk and South Indian Carnatic music with heavenly improvisation.”
Opening the evening is Maktub: Ashes to Alchemy, a striking solo by Vancouver-based dance artist Vidya Kotamraju. Blending Bharata Natyam, global music, and contemporary movement, the piece is inspired by The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and shaped by themes of migration, identity, and transformation. With voice, projections, and the haunting NAVTAR® instrument, Vidya creates an emotionally charged performance that bridges tradition and innovation.
